They were only the support but for a moment in time they stole the show.
Picture this, Edgeley Park in June with the sun beating down and about 10 thousand people waiting in anticipation for Stockport’s finest, Blossoms. But what’s a good band without an even better support. Enter the Mossley Punks, Cabbage.
Just moments before the pretty boys of the Blinders had shown us there take on squeaky clean bubblegum punk, and it’s at this point that I start to realise I’m surrounded by Cabbage fanboys who are already starting to get loud. One of them is getting cigarette ash all over my then boyfriend Alex, who has no music taste but without him I wouldn’t have been able to attend, so I guess I can’t drag him too much.
Opening with their newest single, ‘Torture’, you wouldn’t think that this was the biggest audience they have played too. Dressed in what I can only describe as your dad’s holiday wardrobe, for Cabbage this support slot is just them doing their own unhinged act on a bigger scale.
The sound of ‘Uber Capitalist Death Trade’, echoes around Stockport, sharply contrasting with the bright skies above as it spreads the bands punk ethos.
By the fifth song we’ve arrived at the absolute masterpiece that is ‘Dinner Lady.’ If you haven’t listened to it, I beg you to stop reading now and listen to it first, honestly, it’s wild. ‘Dinner Lady’ was my introduction to Cabbage, so you best believe I was screaming every word and jumping about like my life depended on it. For those of you stupid enough not to listen to the song, it tells the story of a dinner lady who is bored one day and adds a special, personal ingredient to the quiche. Now if that isn’t the sort of song you want to laugh about and generally enjoy then obviously, you’re a moody bastard and there’s nowt I can do to help you.
