Lets Be Honest About ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’

Today was the release of the highly anticipated album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form,’ from The 1975. However, the album has divided opinions and after listening to it myself, here is my take.

To put in plain terms the album is all filler and no killer. The album is obscenely long and for what reason? For many fans this reads as horrifically pretentious and self-indulgent even though front man Matty Healy has stated that he didn’t want it to come across as that.

Upon listening, it becomes obvious as to why the songs released as singles were chosen, as any other song featured on the album, that isn’t an unneeded interlude, is simply an afterthought in order to bulk out the album into the mass that it is.

While I do admire the band for experimenting and moving away from their usual soft pop, even going as far as an attempt at a punk revival with the song ‘People,’ although it becomes clear that the best received song off the album was ‘If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know),’ which is reminiscent of the earlier eras of The 1975. Maybe suggesting that the experimental new era will never top the success of earlier releases.

As a whole, NOACF was mediocre at best and hyped up to a point of absurdity. Don’t waste your time with the filler and just stick to the singles.
